Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy
Psychotherapy is a type of therapy used to treat mental health issues and emotional difficulties on a one-to-one or group setting. It involves speaking to a trained mental health professional, to understand the cause behind the difficulties and finding solutions to overcome the problem. Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy.
CBT is an evidence based treatment for psychological symptoms, which means it has been studied in several large-scale clinical trials, involving thousands of patients, investigating the effectiveness of the therapy.
CBT focuses on raising awareness of how we are maintaining the issue through our thoughts and behaviour, in the here and now, and it helps in finding solutions to overcome the problem by challenging thoughts and adapting behaviours.
CBT model: You can learn to increase awareness of your difficulties by asking yourself what happened in that moment when you were feeling negative, using the CBT model shown below.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness enables people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, in particular stressful experiences. It can increase our ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices.
Mindfulness involves being more aware of your thoughts, feelings and the world around you in the present moment, bringing the attention to what is being experienced in the here and now. It is by being in the present moment that we can introduce positive feelings such as enjoyment and calmness.
Many studies have shown how mindfulness helps to make changes in the brain activities, in particular in the area of the brain associated with emotions. Research has shown positive effects on several other aspects of a person’s health, including the mind, the body and behaviour, as well as relationships with others.
